We’re paying for “the economic opportunity of our time” with our homes and livelihoods. Our countryside will be permanently and irreparably damaged. All for profit, this has nothing to do with saving the planet.
The UK “needs” an additional 275GW of capacity by 2050 and SSEN et al are proposing to build infrastructure to service over 700GW in a connections queue that has generated an economic bubble. How is it environmentally friendly to build almost 3 times more than required? Those gold rush speculators will drive electricity prices up, not down, and we will pay for generations as both consumers and communities.
The costs have not been assessed. What will the impact be on our tourism industry, our housing market, our farmers, our local businesses? Our ecology and environment? What cost to our NHS and local councils? No socio economic impact assessment has been conducted anywhere. These plans are called the ASTI projects by OFGEM. They thought they would cost around £20 billion but that cost has escalated to almost £60 billion in just 12 months due to supply chain inflation caused by the artificial deadline. It can’t be done, there isn’t enough steel or enough manufacturing capacity. It’s not fiscally responsible to proceed. We can improve the efficiency of our existing grid by 2 to 3 but that’s not being done.
We’re being mocked.
